Du Toitskloof Fairtrade Initiative’s Commitment to Education

At the heart of the Du Toitskloof Fairtrade Initiative lies a steadfast commitment to uplifting the youth of our community, ensuring they have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to their own and our country’s economic growth. By investing in education and skills development, our initiative provides our farming community’s youth with the foundation they need to pursue sustainable careers and break the cycle of poverty.

One of the key ways in which the Du Toitskloof Fairtrade Initiative supports young people is through its bursary programme. These bursaries assist students from our farming communities, who lack the financial and logistic resources to access university or college education.

The bursaries cover essential expenses such as tuition fees, books, accommodation, and other necessities, reducing financial barriers and allowing students to focus on their studies. Career guidance is also provided to Grade 9 learners, helping them make informed decisions about their future paths. By Grade 11, student progress is assessed to ensure they are on track to pursue their chosen careers successfully.

Beyond formal tertiary education, the Du Toitskloof Fairtrade Initiative also invests in skills development programmes aimed at improving work readiness in the Rawsonville area. These programmes provide young people with practical training and industry-relevant skills, increasing their employability and broadening their career prospects.

The past year has been a testament to the impact of the Initiative’s efforts. During 2023-2024, the DTK Fairtrade Initiative proudly supported seven students in their tertiary studies. These students pursued degrees in vital fields such as Law (LLB), Education (BEd), Early Childhood Development (ECD) Administration, and Social Work. Each of these disciplines plays a critical role in community development and economic growth, reinforcing the initiative’s vision of fostering a skilled and self-sufficient society.
