Du Toitskloof Fairtrade Initiative's Impact on Rural Health

The Du Toitskloof Fairtrade Initiative is making strides in improving healthcare access in Rawsonville, with their established Fairtrade clinic and mobile clinic. Our rural areas struggle with health challenges due to factors like poverty and limited access to medical services. The DTK Fairtrade clinic addresses these challenges by bringing healthcare directly to these communities, offering services such as medical evaluations, family planning, TB and HIV screenings, and chronic illness management.

The mobile clinic visit our Fairtrade-accredited farms weekly, providing essential primary and specialised care. Funded by Fairtrade premiums from our Du Toitskloof Fairtrade wine sales, the project highlights the connection between improving healthcare access, reducing poverty, and enhancing overall health in South Africa.

In addition to general healthcare, the initiative integrates occupational health and safety programmes, including regular medical examinations to ensure the fitness of workers. Special attention is given to eye care, with subsidies for prescription eyewear and regular vision checks, supporting both the health of workers and their families.

Rural clinics are essential for delivering basic medical services, maternal and child care, and chronic disease management. The Du Toitskloof Fairtrade Initiative plays a crucial role in promoting health and well-being in these remote areas.

From April - June 2024, the DTK Fairtrade clinic saw over 200 patients per month.
