16 Days of Activism Event
On Friday, 10 November, Du Toitskloof Fairtrade Initiative (Fairhills Association) hosted a 16 Days of Activism event for the women from our Fairtrade farms. Advocate Cindy Abdol, from our neighbouring town Worcester, spearheaded a crucial discussion on violence against women and children.
The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is a global campaign typically centered around the period from November 25th to December 10th. Despite numerous endeavors to raise awareness, South Africa continues to grapple with high instances of violence against women and children.
The aim of this campaign is to heighten awareness regarding this pressing issue and shed light on its detrimental impact on our communities. The goal is also to raise awareness on strategies to combat and address this issue proactively.
Advocate Cindy Abdol delivered an insightful talk, delving into the realities faced by women and children in rural South Africa. She meticulously outlined the necessary steps to be taken in the aftermath of such violence, addressing the process with great care. Additionally, she emphasised the stigma that both women and men may encounter within the community following incidents of sexual assault and other forms of violence.
The event was organized by Myra Hoffman and her Fairhills team, who not only coordinated the talk but also prepared care packs for the women to take home. Media24 sponsored magazines for the occasion, and catering services were thoughtfully provided.
